Madhurie, thanks a lot for your timely reply, As you have suggested I will send a letter, to the principal along with my wife,just in case if I am not able to attend, the interview, yes my wife can manage the admission by herself. Also my wife said as her niece and nephew both are in same school, it may also help.

Hi Dheeraj, I think if your case is genuine there is nothing you can do.If your wife can handle the admission, then there is no reason why the interview will be denied. Give an application to the principal from you stating the reason of ur absence.
Yes later the admission becomes difficult and based on only the vacancy.

Also in continuation of my previous question. What are chances of getting into Bishop , if we try in Lower Kg in 2011, just in case if we cannot get in nursery in 2010, are the chances diminishing from lower kg to get admission, someone told me , that if admission is secured in nursery in good schools ,its good, else it becomes very unpredictable after that, how true is it for classes like JGK or UKG. your response would help me on both the above questions(posts)

Hello , I have filled admission form for my son who would be seeking admission in Nursery in Bishop co-ed in Kalyani nagar, we reside in US, my wife and my son are planning to move to India in Jan to attend BIshop interview sometime in Jan end or Feb 2010, If for any reason I am not able to attend the interview being abroad, would it still be possible to seek admission in Bishop, are they flexible or very strict in terms of both parents interview.

I have a similar experience as Mr. Manish. My daughter knows all her animals, fruits, her name, her schools name butif questioned in Marathi our mother tongue! However i strongly feel we need to take pride about our mother tongue only then will our kids nurture true respect for it.
As far as preparations for the interview is concerned please remember to be positive and remember the capacity of our little ones is certainly far beyond our thinking. I’ve noticed that when we are tensed or apprehensive or negative about something that emotion reflects in our kids. So please remember to train your kid with a genuine confidence that he is going to cruise through easily. All the best!

Yeah I understand that. Deep inside, I know, they expect English, but I guess this is not right. Answer in mother(father’s) tongue should suffice as that is what they are maximum exposed to. Later they can learn English, as they would study in English medium anyway. But this world doesn’t function the way we think

I have started conversing with my son (I will be seeking admissions in junior KG) in English and he is picking up but not fit for interview. He knows the names of the most of the objects around him in English (and Hindi), but phrases he won’t understand and speak. Let us see.

Hi Manish, Yes u got that right, no right or wrongs …
Well, as far as English is concerned, since the these are English medium schools, the medium of teaching and communication will be English .
But in Nursery the emphasis in not testing your kid’s proficiency in a language, as they are suppose to be talking in their mother tongue only.
But since now-a-days kids start going to playschools even as early as 1 yr olds, they pick up english too.
Hence it is expected that kids will know english.

I have consciously been talking in hindi and english for each sentence to my kids since they were one year. Now they can easily understand both languages. Now I am focusing back on hindi at home as both of them have started hindi language in school. Also, I am not the kind of mom who would look down upon hindi, so I purposely converse in hindi when in a group of pseudo people. Most of the times, (my experience) rest of the crowd starts talking in hindi feeling comfortable leaving the stuck up ones in a corner. :p I think I owe that much to my country and society.

Kids at young age can pick 4-5 languages without difficulty if exposed to. A friend’s daughter speaks to her mom in telgu, dad in hindi, dadi in punjabi, maid in marathi and rest in english !!!

Preempting your dilemma, if you ask the above question twice daily, casually, by the third day he will be responding to you even before you ask him the question. At times you can leave the questions incomplete, and you will hear the rest of the question from him. Then u better give the answer .

And yes when the questions are asked in english by the teachers, they need not respond in english in a full sentence. Just the simple one word answer is enuff, where there is no differentiation in hindi or english!

I will thank my dad for two things he taught us early, eat non veg even though he was veg and talk in english. Both are in my opinion very important for survival in today’s global work environment. ( Vegetarians pls excuse me…)

What an exhaustive list and I get your point. There are no correct answers. Only correct responses.

The problem with my child is that he is very comfortable with Hindi but not at all with English. Your questions were all in English ?

If questions are in Hindi, he might answer all the questions (if his mood allows, that is) otherwise, he won’t understand much.

Do they ask in English only ?

Vrushali, Thanks and yes I think if you are looking for a different kind of teaching methodology what to you need to know is a school which uses Montessori type teaching methodology.

I have not done any review on such schools as yet but I know Rainbow Montessori is a well known school where teaching is based on activities that make kids learn concepts and values .

Which school has a different approach towards teaching methodology and is a good blend of academics & extra-cirricular activities? Also can you guide me regarding St. Helena’s School’s Review? I’ve heard they hardly have any sports & extra-cirricular activities….is this true?

Well Older one said mama when was 7 months, after that he just kept us waiting. The younger one did not say a single word till two, then one day he said a full one line ” what is this” when he was 3 years .

I dunno wat I said but I think my parents are happy I uttered later than normal kids …

So lemme shorten it.

My two sons and myself , started speaking only after 3 years and now we can give speaches :p

Also your son is perfectly fine. You are getting panicked like all first time moms do:D. I have been there done all that too.

I was little worried when I imagined that my son was not responding to sound when he was 3 months. Dr Irani in mumbai took a book and hit it on the wall, which startled my son and he turned his head towards the wall, proving his hearing was all fine!

So chill and give time to your son to prove himself.

As far as your query related to auditory processing disorder is concerned, I am sorry but I am not qualified to advice you on this topic. I can share the email id of a good consultant Ms Chitra Khare CNKHARE@yahoo.co.in, who is a very experienced expert in this field.

ajji means grandmother in marathi :p

One thing I would like to add is, earlier he used to say consonents like “tha”, “ba”, “ma”. But now he does not say that except for vowels like “aaa” and “eee” and sometimes I can hear a “j” also like “ajji..”(not that he knows what ajji means)

Thanks Madhurie, V V V useful article. Any pointers on how to screen a 1 yr old for disability. Just wanted to check if this is normal with my kid who is now 15 months old.

- He does not speak a word even papa or mamma, but he babbles and shouts a lot. When I say “Aaammeet”(his name is Amit), he says “Aaaeee”
- He does not look when we call his name, how much ever we try. But if papu cant dance and some other songs appear on tv, he will turn to look at the tv with great interest
What is auditory processing disorder. Is it possible that some of the sounds they cant hear, while some others they can hear? He is interested in people, children, traffic, curious and otherwise quite active. But what I am worried about is his lack of speaking and not turning to us when we call his name.

What are your thoughts?
