No, I am not talking about your child’s transfers within a city. I am talking about your transfers or planned moves to different jobs in different cities. Off late I am flooded with requests from parents who are moving from various cities in India to Pune. They are mostly getting transferred. And there are those who are opting to join new companies. Great and congratulations to all of them.
But, if you are moving from one city to another in the search of better job profile, better package or better responsibility every 2-3 years, stop and think.
Have you heard of a term called domicile? (In law, domicile is the status or attribution of being a permanent resident in a particular jurisdiction. A person can remain domiciled in a jurisdiction even after they have left it, if they have maintained sufficient links with that jurisdiction or have not displayed an intention to leave permanently (i.e., if that person has moved to a different state, but has not yet formed an intention to remain there indefinitely).
Yes, I am sure you have as most of you are from the engineering or technical backgrounds. So, you would have submitted your domicile certificate to the college, without which you could not get an admission in any of the state colleges.
So if you wish your child to be eligible for admission under the general quota, which is a huge boon, looking at the competition, ensure that you have spent at least 7-8 years in one state, preferably when the child is appearing for class 9, 10, 11 and 12.
So if you are in Maharashtra or Karnataka, do not make the mistake of moving away from these states when your child is in class 9 to class 12.
Ofcourse, if it is necessary, try to find the win-win solution. I have to date not found any situation where the parents were disappointed if not elated.
