Government says 3 years is the right age for Nursery

By Madhurie Singh, December 14, 2012

The government says 3 years is the right age for Nursery class. But how many parents and school agree to it.

Going by  the trend of which I was part too in my times.

It was a need to send my first son to a preschool when he was just 1.5 years only! I feel sad now but back then, I had to take a breather as my second son was just born. SO a 2 hour preschool seemed a boon to me back then. But trust me,  it was not a happy decision looking at him wailing and slowly getting used to the routine. So by 3 years he was in Nursery and so on. But since he is a June born child, he is always fine by the age.

But when the other second son was 1.5 years, things were a bit different. He is a November born child, so he could be in both the classes Nursery or JrKg.  I had no doubt that I would rather have him being older than the youngest. And so he repeated his JrKg. Most parents take pride in taking the other decision.

Today I am the happiest mom when it comes to teaching both my sons. Actually there is not much effort needed from either side. They pick up fast and I explain well. 😉

So one session is enough for any topic. Of course I  hardly use books to teach them and no wonder they tell me I am the best teacher in the world!

( For example today while doing states of the matters, they were thrilled to learn in the kitchen all states of matter were right in front of them when I started cooking. Solid rice transformed into a semi solid state when water was added and heated. Solid vegetables when heated turned into semi liquid. Solid daal turned into liquid state when heated in water. Atta changed state from solid powder to semi solid to again chemically changed, never to return to its original state in the form of rotis. And not to mention the roti which got burnt in this study trip to blackish ash ! Can these example ever be compared to the boring magnesium ribbon burnt to white ash to teach chemical changes or states of matter being transformed! And not mention the three states of the matter which we excrete which was the hilarious learning examples for my sons who will never ever forget these examples. 😛 )

So back to the age of the admission of your child.

Next year there may be a chance that the Gov. raises the age limit to 4 years for Nursery. I would be the happiest person and I know many parents will be sulking.

But this is a blessing in disguise for many situations as I can foresee:

  • More time for kids to remain kids.
  • More attachment to parents and the environment and pets.
  • Better able to grasp everything taught in schools hence better understandability.
  • Lesser stress parents and kids.
  • Less fights, abuses and divorces.
  • The rush in the schools will decrease. Hence no need to stand in queues or pay donations to get admissions.
  • Less demand is better service by the schools.
  • Fees will also be better controlled.
  • Less student ratio
  • More attention given to children
  • Less students passing out at least in the next 12th  year onwards, so better chances of employbility for the existing professionals.
  • More employed adults hence less drugs, corruption and crimes.
  • Safer Society.  🙂

Ok a lot seems wishful and utopian but a few will happen sooner than it can if things are left like now. So don't fret my dear parents if the age limit goes up, be happy that in future it is you and your child who will gain.

Just like the new PF policy of adding the gross salary instead of only the basic salary under the purview of 12% PF deduction. In the old age it is you who will thank this government policy.

I think St. Mary don't have LKG and has 4 years criteria for Nursery admissions.
